Barcelona's startup ecosystem has climbed to 32nd place globally while maintaining its position among Europe's five leading innovation hubs, according to the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index Report 2026 from StartupBlink.
The report highlights Barcelona's growth of 5.5%, a figure that demonstrates the increasing international relevance of its innovation sector and the strength of a maturing ecosystem.
Barcelona is the only city in Europe's Top 5 still climbing the rankings.
Key achievements
The 2026 edition of the index recognises Barcelona's progress across several dimensions of ecosystem strength:
- Ranked 23rd globally in “Social & Leisure”, Barcelona's strongest sector — spanning travel technology, gaming, entertainment and digital experiences.
- Third in Europe by ecosystem value, supported by a network of companies, scientific infrastructure, universities, investors and ecosystem support organisations.
- A regional success story: every Catalan city in the rankings grew this year, making it the only southern European region where all classified cities are expanding.
